WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO VIA INSTAGRAM

March 26, 2014

Working full-time plus being pregnant has left me with very little energy or ambition to blog.  At 9+ months (or 37 weeks), I'm doing very, very little these days.  This peek at my Instagram is pretty indicative of what I've been up to for the past couple of months.

On the weekend I'd say I get in at least 1-2 naps a day.//I'm more than ready for spring (as I type this we're being hit with MORE snow).//My belly is growing and growing and growing.//I had this Moon Man photo planned since I found out I was pregnant.//Even with the snow I've been enjoying all the extra daylight.//I can balance a lot of stuff on my belly these days!//I found this sweatshirt at the thrift store and couldn't resist.//The nursery is more or less put together.//This kitschy work of art allllllmost made it home with me.

Holiday Gift Guide: How to Shop for Gifts at the Thrift Store, Part II

November 27, 2013

Last week I posted a holiday gift guide that was dedicated to finding gifts at the thrift store.  I put together this week's gift guide with the vintage lover in mind.  As promised, here is part two of my thrift store holiday gift guide.

Vintage/Retro/Kitschy

Vintage thermoses
Not only a useful gift, but I've seen some really awesome vintage thermos collections displayed in creative ways.

Vintage handbags
These are admittedly a little harder to find at the thrift store, but keep your eyes open for details like bakelite handles, beads, embroidery, wooden handles, tapestry, and woven sisal or straw.  These are just a few things that make vintage handbags desirable to someone who loves vintage style.

Vintage glassware
Useful for their intended purpose, but could also serve as vases.  For the bar cart enthusiast, look for cocktail glasses or cocktail shakers.  Maybe you know someone that collects a particular type of glass like milk glass or Depression glass; it's not always abundant, but sometimes the thrift store will have those coveted collectibles and at way better prices than an antique shop.

Vintage Mugs
These are in no short supply at the thrift store.  You can look for collectible mugs like Fireking and Pyrex, or kitschy mugs with weird phrases or images.

Vintage salt and pepper shakers
Again, another useful gift, but retro shakers also look cute displayed.  These ones sat for a time on my kitchen windowsill.

Paint by number paintings
I don't know if it gets much kitschier than a paint by numbers painting, but for those of us that like them this would be a welcome gift.  There is also the option for turning these types of paintings into a DIY project similar to this one over at A Beautiful Mess.  Or even making your own paint by number from a less-than-exciting piece of art from the thrift store, see what Ashley Ann did here on her blog Under the Sycamore.

Vintage jars and containers
There are always kitschy little jars like this squirrel-nut combo at the thrift store; more decorative than utilitarian.  For someone that loves to bake you could look for cookie jars or a set of flour and sugar containers.  As someone who collects vintage apothecary jars and bottles, I know I would gladly accept any size, variety, color, particularly ones that have old labels still intact.

Other thrift store items to give:
Vintage travel souvenirs
Vintage perfume bottles
Vintage serving trays or bar cart (if you have great thrifting luck)

Have you found gift-able treasures at the thrift store?

Truly Gifted

It's somehow sad that Thanksgiving always gets the shaft for the holidays. Not as much fun as Halloween, not as much religious/global/ gifting/commercial opportunity as Christmas/Hanukkah/etc... But alas, we're all caught up in the holidays in the blogosphere. Between the gifts, the celebrations, the reflection of the year that's about to end, there's so much ground to cover! This week, we have a delightful round of holiday inspired posts to get you thinking about the rest of the year. Believe it or not... we don't have that much time left.
